Three accessories worth carrying in your listing bag

Most listing shoots fail for the same three reasons: the phone moves, the light is wrong, or the room is dressed wrong. None of these need a pro photographer to fix. They need three small things you can keep in the side pocket of your work bag and forget about until you walk through the door.

The total cost is under $60. Each one earns its place inside the first listing you use it on.

$60
The total cost of the three accessories that fix the failure modes behind most phone-shot listing photos

1. A mini phone tripod (under $30)

A flexible-leg tripod with a phone clip. Joby GorillaPod Mobile, Manfrotto Pixi Mini, or any equivalent. Around $25 to $30 retail.

Why it matters: a hand-held phone shot at the wide focal length used for interiors will pick up small camera shake even when you cannot feel it. The shake shows up as soft edges, especially in lower light. A tripod removes the shake entirely. It also lets you lock the camera level, which is the difference between a clean listing photo and one that looks tilted on the carousel scroll.

The bend-leg style works because you can wrap it around a stair rail, perch it on a kitchen counter, or set it flat on the floor for a low corner shot.

This single $30 accessory is the highest-impact change most agents can make to their listing photos. See The $30 mini tripod that pays for itself in one shoot for the longer version.

2. A pack of warm-white LED bulbs (around $15)

A six-pack of 2700K LED bulbs in standard A19 base. Most kitchens and primary bedrooms have at least one bulb burned out or one bulb that is the wrong colour temperature. A mismatched bulb in an otherwise white room makes the cabinets read yellow on camera and the white walls read green.

Carry six bulbs, swap the obvious offenders before the shoot, and swap them back if the seller asks. The cost of carrying a pack is negligible. The cost of a kitchen photo with one yellow bulb in a row of three white ones is a re-shoot.

Two related notes:

  • Match all bulbs in the same room. Three matched 2700K bulbs always beat a 5000K daylight bulb mixed with two 2700K warm bulbs.
  • Replace burned-out bulbs before staging. A dark spot in a ceiling fixture reads as a maintenance signal in a buyer’s gut, even if they cannot articulate why.

3. A microfibre cloth and a small bottle of glass cleaner

A folded microfibre and a 50ml travel bottle of glass cleaner. Around $5 to $10 together.

What this is actually for: stainless steel appliances, glass shower doors, and bathroom mirrors. These three surfaces reflect the room. They also reflect you, the tripod, and the photographer’s hand. A streaked stainless fridge is one of the most common tells in a phone-shot listing. A streaked mirror reads as “the seller does not clean this house,” which is the wrong message regardless of how clean the rest of it is.

Walk through with the cloth before you set up the tripod. Wipe the fridge front, the oven door, the microwave, the master mirror, and the powder-room mirror. Two minutes. It is the cheapest production-quality upgrade in your bag.

The short version

A $30 tripod, a $15 bulb pack, and $10 of cleaning supplies cover the three failure modes that wreck most phone-shot listing photos: camera shake, mismatched colour temperature, and visible reflections. The combined cost is less than a single takeout dinner. The return is the difference between an MLS listing that gets clicked and one that gets scrolled past.
